NURS 6002 /3 week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) play a crucial role in addressing mental health issues, especially in underserved populations across both rural and urban areas. It’s evident that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted mental health, with individuals and healthcare workers facing unprecedented challenges. The emotional toll, stress, and anxiety associated with the pandemic are concerning, and it’s essential to enhance mental health programs and awareness to meet this growing demand (NURS 6002 /3 week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities).
Your response resonates with my perspective on the importance of addressing mental health in both urban and rural settings. The COVID-19 pandemic has indeed left a profound mark on emotional and mental well-being. Programs like the one offered at Walden University are crucial in preparing healthcare professionals to meet the increasing needs in the field of mental health. Sample Discussion 2
Greetings, I am [Name], an RN holding a BSN degree. My journey in the healthcare field began years ago as a C.N.A., fueled by a deep-seated aspiration to become an RN. However, the path was long and arduous. Following my training as a nursing assistant, I pursued my degree as an LPN. I discovered a role that resonated with me in a pediatric office, a position that allowed me to bring my children to work during weekend shifts, providing a perfect balance as a mother of three.
My career as an LPN led me through various healthcare domains. Despite enduring personal hardships, including the tragic loss of my eldest child in a motor vehicle accident and a divorce, I remained unwavering in my pursuit. As a single parent to my youngest child, I continued working as a home health nurse and an orthopedic nurse. My determination led me to embark on the journey of attaining my RN degree through Excelsior College, a journey I completed with persistence and honor. Subsequently, I pursued my BSN degree, also through Excelsior College, culminating in a program completion with honors.
Today, I find myself on a new path towards obtaining a degree as an FNP, inspired by my youngest child’s pursuit of an RN degree and her own family. The search for the right institution led me to Walden University, a university that shares my values and goals, supporting students in realizing their dreams. Initially, I considered enrolling in the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care program, but after careful deliberation, I chose the path of a Family Nurse Practitioner and Primary Care Provider. This decision felt most sensible as an older student (NURS 6002/3, Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities).
Walden University’s vision aligned with my own aspirations, focusing on the potential of graduates to be change agents in a society grappling with 21st-century challenges, working towards the advancement of the “greater global good” (Walden University, 2020a). The Vision and Mission statements were particularly compelling due to their emphasis on social change. Walden emphasizes “positive social change” as a deliberate effort to develop and employ ideas, actions, and strategies that elevate the dignity and worth of communities, individuals, organizations, and diverse cultures (Walden University, 2020a).
Our society faces myriad challenges that necessitate change. As an FNP, I believe I can reach out to often-forgotten populations, including the homeless, the elderly living alone, pregnant women and children, prisoners, victims of domestic violence, the disabled, the mentally or physically challenged, veterans, and individuals with little to no income (Stanhope, 2014).
Walden is committed to advancing specialized knowledge and values nursing as an autonomous field marked by dignity, integrity, legal accountability, and ethical responsibility (Walden University, 2020b). The vulnerable populations I mentioned depend on individuals like us, willing to learn and serve. The ANA Code of Ethics underscores the importance of practicing with respect, compassion, and dignity, while advocating for patient rights and promoting health and safety (ANA, 2015) (NURS 6002/3, Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities).
My pursuit of becoming an FNP or advanced practice nurse is a journey filled with excitement and trepidation. I’ve faced challenges in the past and triumphed, and I am confident in my ability to do so again. Walden’s commitment to student success aligns perfectly with our determination to achieve our goals. They share our belief in promoting positive change, a crucial element in helping others through specialized roles and professionalism, enabling us to enhance the health and well-being of individuals with quality care (Walden University, 2020a).
